Vent: My neighbor called our game nights 'a weird hobby' and it got me thinking
I was talking to my neighbor Dave last week and he asked what I did over the weekend. I told him we had a 6 hour Twilight Imperium session with my regular group. He just laughed and said 'You guys are still into that board game stuff? It's a weird hobby for grown men.' It wasn't mean, but it hit different coming from someone I see every day. Made me realize how much time and money we put into this that outsiders just don't get. We've spent over $2000 on games in this group alone. Has anyone else had a casual comment from a non-gamer make you question the whole thing?

Dave's comment says more about him than your game nights. Spending time with friends doing something you all enjoy is never weird, no matter what it is. That money went towards hundreds of hours of fun and hanging out, which is a pretty good deal. People drop way more on season tickets or golf clubs and nobody bats an eye.

What about the cost of not having those game nights? I've seen friends drift apart because they never made time for regular hangouts. That shared hobby becomes the glue. Missing out on those inside jokes and late talks, that's the real waste of money. A board game on the table is cheaper than therapy, and sometimes just as good for you.

My uncle said the same thing about our D&D group ten years ago. Now he joins us for Catan every Thanksgiving.
