Appreciation post: the weld inspector at the Marathon refinery in Gary who actually showed me something new

Went down to Gary last month for a week long turnaround job. This old timer inspector came by while I was laying down a root pass on a feed line and just watched for a minute. Then he showed me this trick for setting your amps when you're on a ladder and can't reach your machine. Said to listen to the crackle, if it sounds like bacon it's too hot, if it sounds like rain on a tin roof you're pretty close. I'd been guessing for 8 years. He was right too, cut my rework on overhead joints way down. Has anyone else picked up a small trick from an inspector or engineer that stuck with you longer than any formal training?
