Can we talk about the moderator who made us skip chapter 7

Our book club meetup in the back room of that coffee shop on Elm Street got totally derailed when the moderator declared chapter 7 was 'too controversial' for discussion and we just moved on. Has anyone else had a leader try to silence a debate about a book's tough themes instead of letting the group hash it out?

Oh geez, this is exactly the kind of thing that bugs me about how people handle tough stuff in general. It's like when my neighbor avoids talking about politics at family dinners and everyone just sits there awkwardly eating their mashed potatoes. We lose so much real understanding when we just skip over chapters nobody wants to touch.

Totally agree with you @margaretc42, that mashed potato scene is painfully accurate. Had the same thing happen at my uncle's cookout last summer when someone brought up the local school board mess and everyone just stared at their burgers. We really do rob ourselves of getting anywhere real when we tiptoe around the hard stuff like that.

@margaretc42 nailed it. Skipping chapters is just polite avoidance.
