I was dead set against audiobooks for years, but a 14 hour drive to Dallas changed my mind

For like 5 years I told everyone audiobooks weren't real reading. Thought it was cheating basically. Then I had to drive from Houston to Dallas for a family thing and grabbed a free trial of Audible on a whim. Listened to Project Hail Mary on the way up and back. Got so into it I sat in the driveway for 20 minutes finishing a chapter. Now I do about 3 audiobooks a month along with my physical books. So which side are you on - is listening to a book the same as reading it or is it different?

Totally with you @emma_lee22. Used to judge audiobooks hard, but they converted me too.

I mean, I was basically the audiobook police for years, ready to hand out citations for "cheating at reading." Then my wife convinced me to try one on a long drive and I almost missed my exit because I was so into the narrator's voice for the scary parts. Now I'm that person who walks around the house with earbuds in, pretending to do chores but really just waiting for the next plot twist. It's like I betrayed my own book club.

Got hooked on audiobooks during my commute last year and now I can't go back. I actually retained more of the story than when I read it myself because the narrator's pacing kept me locked in. Now I mix both formats depending on my mood and it feels like having a secret second book club.
