Found a 1920s book at an estate sale - binding was falling apart

Grabbed this old poetry book from a estate sale in Cleveland for $3. The spine was completely detached and pages were loose. I tried a basic Japanese paper repair on the hinges - worked better than I expected. Anyone here ever restore a book that old?

binding was falling apart" - gotta say I think you made a mistake here. Why would you mess with a book that old? Those loose pages and detached spine are what give it character. Now you've gone and "fixed" it and probably ruined any resale value it had. These antique books are fragile for a reason, theyre supposed to stay original even if they fall apart. Japanese paper repair sounds fancy but youre really just covering up the history. If you wanted a book that looks new you shoulda bought a reprint or something.

Honestly? I used to be on your side about this. I was all about "never touch the original" no matter how bad it looked. But then I saw a 200 year old book that couldn't even be opened without pages falling out. It was just sitting there, unusable. What's the point of history if nobody can actually read it? Your post made me realize that keeping it intact doesn't mean keeping it stuck together. A book that falls apart is just a pile of paper, not a book anymore.
