Why I never leave mortar on my trowel overnight anymore

In my experience, I used to let mortar dry on my trowels to save time at the end of the day. But it caused the steel to pit and rust, costing me a lot in replacements. Now, I always wash them right after use, and my tools last much longer. Your mileage may vary, but this small habit change has been a big help for me.

Wait, have you tried letting it dry and then just chipping it off? I clean mine sometimes but honestly leaving it on forms a protective crust for me. The steel never touches air so it doesn't rust. Maybe it depends on your local humidity or the mortar mix.

Tbh, that rust buildup sneaks up on you.
