I finally figured out why my grandma's soup stretched 4 days and mine lasted 2
She kept a bag of rice and a bag of dried beans in the freezer door, and half a cup of either turns a pot of leftover veggie scraps into something that feeds me until Thursday. Did anyone else learn this from a family member, or did you have to figure out the hard way like I mostly did?
Freezing the rice and beans is smart but that's not really why her soup stretched. My mom did the same thing and hers lasted about the same as mine until I watched her cook. She used way less water and simmered it low for hours, so the beans broke down and got thick. A little bit of that goes a lot further than a thin broth. The freezer just kept the bugs out and made them last longer, it didn't make the pot bigger.
