Found a whole stash of 35mm cameras at a thrift store in Detroit last weekend

I was poking around a small thrift place off Gratiot Avenue and found maybe 15 old SLRs just sitting on a shelf. Most were covered in dust but a few looked totally functional, like a Canon AE-1 with a decent 50mm lens attached. Anybody else ever have luck finding cameras like this for cheap, or is it usually a waste of time to dig through those shops? I'm curious if there's a trick to spotting the good ones fast.

I read somewhere that thrift stores near colleges are goldmines for old camera stuff.

College town thrift stores are a goldmine, but last time I tried to spot an old camera I just ended up with a bag full of weird Tupperware that smells like mothballs.

Doubt it's that serious lol. People talk about college thrift stores like they're full of Leicas but it's mostly busted point-and-shoots with scratches on the lens. Last one I found had a dead battery slot and someone's old prom photos still in it. @henry_anderson54 might have had better luck if he dug past the Tupperware but honestly the smell alone would have sent me running.
