Just realized my old sleeping bag liner was making me colder

I always used a cheap cotton liner from a box store, thinking any extra layer was good. On a trip to the White Mountains last fall, I woke up freezing even though my bag was rated for 20 degrees. I switched to a thin silk liner I got on sale for $30, and the next night I was actually warm. Has anyone else found that the wrong liner material can mess with your bag's rating?

My old wool socks did the same thing, they just trapped sweat and made my feet feel like ice.

Could be the opposite though, maybe you just run hot!
