PSA: My Therm-a-Rest pad lost half its R-value after 2 years of use

I bought a NeoAir XTherm in 2022, rated at R-6.9, and it was a toasty dream for winter trips around Flagstaff. Now after two seasons of regular use, I wake up feeling the ground cold through it way faster than before. Has anyone else noticed their inflatable pad's insulation degrading this quickly?

Oh man, YES. I had the exact same thing happen with my XTherm. I bought mine in 2021 for winter camping in the Sierra and the first year it was like sleeping on a cloud of warmth. Now after like 30-40 nights I can totally feel the cold seeping through from the ground. It's wild how fast it dropped off. I actually measured mine with a simple test using a heat lamp and a thermometer and it felt like half as warm as it used to be. I'm honestly pretty bummed because for the price you'd think it would last longer than that.

That bit about measuring it with a heat lamp is interesting... did you get any actual numbers from your test? I've been wondering if this is something measurable or just a feeling you get over time.

Used to think pads lasted forever. @taylor_wells your heat lamp test changed my mind for sure.
