PSA: that $12 headlamp from the hardware store bin held up better than my $60 one
Two summers back my main headlamp died on the second night at a site near Bend, so I grabbed a $12 no-name one out of the clearance bin on the way out of town, mostly as a joke. That cheap thing survived three more trips, two rainstorms, and a drop off a rock onto concrete, while my fancy one quit after one season. The only real downside is the beam is kinda narrow and the strap feels flimsy, but it refuses to die. So now I'm wondering if I just got lucky, or if I've been overpaying for lights this whole time. What's the cheapest piece of gear you own that outlasted the expensive version?

Cold probably killed the fancy one, cheap lights skip the chip that quits below freezing.
