Talked to a park ranger in Yosemite that changed my whole take on ultralight gear

I was bragging about my new 2-pound tent to a ranger last month, and he just shook his head. He said he's seen too many people with 'featherweight' gear get into real trouble when a sudden storm hits, like the one that dumped 4 inches of rain in 2 hours last June. He told me, 'Your gear needs to match the worst weather, not the best forecast.' That hit different because it wasn't some online argument, it was from a guy who pulls people out of bad spots. I'm rethinking my whole setup now. Has anyone else had a moment that made them shift from chasing the lowest weight to focusing on real safety?

Four inches of rain in two hours sounds absolutely wild.

Right? @wade_anderson, we got a downpour like that last summer and my street turned into a river. Could you even see anything out your windows?

Four inches in two hours is a lot, but @patel.eric, does it really make a river or just a big puddle?
