TIL my $15 rain fly works better upside down and I wasted 2 trips in the Ozarks figuring it out
I bought a cheap rain fly for my tent and it leaked on a trip to Devils Den State Park back in April. My buddy flipped it over as a joke and the seam on the edge sat right over the vent gap, so no water got in all night during a real downpour. Now I feel dumb because the setup guide showed the logo on top and I never questioned it. Anyone else find gear that only works when you use it the 'wrong' way?
My buddy had the same thing happen with his hammock straps. He kept sliding down the trees all night and waking up on the ground, and he was about to toss the whole setup. Turned out he had been wrapping them the way the little picture showed, but flipping the wrap made the straps bite into the bark instead of slipping. He used them the "wrong" way for a whole season after that and never slid once. The instructions are written by someone who never actually slept in the thing, is my guess. Good on your friend for messing with your setup, that joke saved your trip.
