Tried a $12 foam pad under my sleeping bag at Joshua Tree last month and slept worse than on bare ground
I figured doubling up on pads would be warmer, but I slid around all night and woke up at 4am freezing. Turns out the foam just trapped cold air under me instead of holding heat. Anyone else have a cheap pad setup that actually works, or should I just save up for an inflatable?
That $12 pad probably failed because foam needs to sit on top of something solid, not on cold desert ground that sucks heat right out of it. A closed cell pad alone works fine if you get one that's thick enough, like the basic blue ones from Walmart that run about $20 and have kept me warm down to the 30s. The sliding around was likely your sleeping bag's slick bottom on slick foam, not the pad being useless.
