Applied for a remote job in Austin. They wanted me to fly in for a 'quick chat'.
Saw a listing for a fully remote project manager role. Spent hours on the application. Got an email asking for an in-person interview next Tuesday. No travel budget mentioned. Felt like a bait and switch. Anyone else run into this with 'remote' jobs lately?

Wonder if they're testing to see who will pay their own way, which tells them a lot about your financial situation. That's a pretty big red flag for company culture.

Consider the company's side for a second. Maybe they just want to see how you handle a real, high pressure situation like last minute travel. It shows real commitment and could actually work in your favor if you impress them. You might be missing a big opportunity by not going.

Yeah, and taking @kelly470's point further, that kind of test sets a bad tone from the start. If they bait and switch on the job details, what else will they be weird about later? A good remote company would be clear and fair from the first contact.
