Bought a $400 scan tool for my home garage and it's been a total game changer

I was tired of guessing on codes with my basic reader, so I bit the bullet on a Launch CRP123. Last month, a 2016 Ford Escape came in with a rough idle and a bunch of weird electrical codes. The tool let me look at live data from the throttle body and compare it to spec... found a bad sensor the generic code wouldn't have caught. It paid for itself on that one job. Anyone else using a mid-level scanner at home, and what's your go-to for weird electrical gremlins?

Update: I finally tried that ultrasonic cleaner trick for shutter blades

Had a Canon AE-1 with sticky blades that wouldn't budge after my normal cleaning, so I ran the whole assembly in my cheap ultrasonic tank for 90 seconds with a 50/50 mix of water and simple green. The gunk that came out was insane, and the blades snap perfectly now. What's the longest you'd leave a part in there before worrying about damage?

I've been using the same brand of budget boning knife for years, the kind you can grab for about twenty bucks. Last month, I finally splurged on a proper high-carbon steel knife from a real cutlery shop, and the difference is night and day. Appreciation post: a guy in my shop called my drawer box glue-up sloppy

He walked over and pointed at a gap you could fit a dime into on a maple drawer. Said 'that's a five year drawer, not a fifty year drawer.' I used to just clamp and move on, but now I check every corner with a square before the glue sets. Takes an extra minute per drawer but they fit perfect every time. Anyone else get called out on something basic that stuck with you?

Just realized my 'quick fix' contract clause cost me a full day

I had a client who kept asking for tiny extra changes after I sent final files. I thought adding 'two rounds of revisions included' to my contract would fix it. This time, they argued that moving a logo 'a little to the left' three separate times counted as one round. Defining what a 'round' actually means took me over eight hours of back and forth emails and a tense call. I should have spelled out that a round ends when I send new files, not when they stop thinking. Has anyone else had to get super specific with their revision terms to stop scope creep?

My friend who runs a print shop said he'd rather I use a bone folder than any metal tool for scoring, which got me thinking about my whole process.

He mentioned that the bone folder gives a more consistent, gentle crease on the paper grain (especially with the 120 gsm stock I use for covers) and now I'm wondering if I've been too rough with my scoring technique this whole time.

Had to choose between a full Windows reinstall or a repair install for a stubborn boot loop

A client's machine in Springfield was stuck in a boot loop after a botched update, and I had to decide between a clean install or a Windows 10 repair install. I went with the repair install, which kept their files and settings, and it fixed the corrupted system files in about 45 minutes. It saved us a ton of time compared to backing up data and reinstalling everything from scratch. Has anyone else had a repair install fail on them, forcing the full reinstall anyway?

Switched from a flat project rate to a day rate for a recent 2-week design job

The client kept adding small tweaks and changes every day, which under my old fixed price would have eaten all my profit. Charging a day rate meant I got paid for the actual time spent, and the scope creep stopped almost immediately because it impacted their budget directly. Had a core shift on a big gear blank pour at the old Tacoma plant

We were pouring a 500 pound gear blank and I saw the sand core start to float up right in the middle of the fill. My foreman yelled 'hold it!' and I jammed a heavy steel rod down the riser to pin it in place until the metal set. It worked, but we had to grind off a big lump of extra metal from the bore. Anyone ever have a better fix for a floating core on a vertical job?
