I finally listened to my dad about using a story stick for cabinets

He always said 'measure twice, cut once' was good, but a story stick was better for matching runs of cabinets. I was doing a kitchen in a 1920s bungalow last week where nothing was square. I made a stick for the upper run and it saved me from three bad cuts because the walls were out by over an inch. Anyone else use sticks for old houses, or do you just trust the tape?

My first kitchen reno I trusted the tape. Had to buy a whole new sheet of plywood. Ray613 is right, mark everything on the stick.

Story sticks are the only way in those old places. I even mark the outlet and switch locations on mine now.

My 1910 craftsman taught me the same hard lesson.
