Saw a crew in Nashville nailing floor joists instead of using hangers
Walked past a new build in East Nashville last Tuesday and saw them nailing joists into a ledger board with just 16d nails no hangers. Some guys swear that's fine for code if you use the right nails but I've seen those pull out too many times what do you all think?
My 2010 fixer-upper in Cookeville had joists nailed the same way and two of them pulled loose from the ledger after a wet spring in 2015. The builder argued it passed inspection but I ended up retrofitting hangers on all of them anyway just for peace of mind. Nails might hold for a while but in my experience the extra couple bucks for hangers is cheap insurance down the road.
