Why does nobody talk about how wrong I was about my miter saw fence?

For three years I just accepted the factory setting, but a guy in Omaha last month showed me his dead-on 90-degree test cut and my whole approach was off. Anyone have a good method for dialing that in besides just a square?

Honestly, that's a classic rookie move. I use a good machinist square against the blade first, then lock the fence down. After that, I make a test cut on a scrap piece and check both edges with the square. Took me forever to figure out that last step.

My buddy spent a whole weekend building a crooked bookshelf because he skipped the test cut. The look on his face when he held up his square was priceless.

Yeah, and don't forget to check for sawdust buildup under the fence before you lock it.
