I used to guess pattern cuts, but not after this job

I always figured I could cut patterned carpet quickly without much prep. That changed when a detailed floral layout took me the whole day instead of a few hours. How do you plan for extra time with complicated designs?

Experience lets you skip the extra planning sometimes.

What happens when you skip the planning part? My coworker calls his surprise experience of total chaos his planning phase. It's not quite the same magic.

That's just how most things work, like @val974 said.

Building on @val974's chaos example, skipping plans on complex patterns is a recipe for DISASTER. Like that time I tried to freehand a border design and the pieces didn't line up AT ALL. Had to recut everything from new stock, which blew the budget. Now I always measure twice and mark pattern repeats clearly. That extra hour of planning saves a FULL day of panic. It's not magic, it's just SMART work.
