Rant: Basement subfloor moisture is holding up my carpet project

I'm putting new carpet in my basement rec area, and the concrete subfloor has damp spots near the wall. I'm worried about mold or the adhesive not sticking over time. What have you tried to dry and seal this kind of subfloor before laying pad? (The product choices at the hardware store are a lot to sort through, honestly.)

Trust me, I've sealed my own regrets into that floor.

My brother's basement in Toledo had the same issue last year. He ran a dehumidifier for a week to dry the concrete. Then he painted on a concrete sealer from the hardware store. Make sure to check for leaks along the wall first.

Last summer in Akron, I saw five basements with water problems. Your brother's method with the dehumidifier and sealer is what most people try first. But here's the thing I keep seeing, people treat the wet concrete without fixing the real issue. It's a quick fix that doesn't last if water is still getting in from outside. My neighbor sealed his basement twice, but the wall crack let more water in each spring. We all want a dry basement, but skipping the leak check just costs more later.

Learned this the hard way in my own place. Got a hairline crack, slapped on some sealer like it was sunscreen. Two months later, had my own indoor swimming pool. I was so proud of my quick fix, but the water just laughed and found a new way in. Now I've got a sump pump and a much lighter wallet.
