Tbh, a $4k retainer usually means there was some serious work already lined up or a complex issue that needed upfront coverage. It's not just some random fee they made you pay for nothing. Ngl, I've seen cases where people get spooked by the number but don't realize it's a credit against future bills, not just a sunk cost. You might want to check if any of that retainer got applied to the actual work or if you're just sitting on a credit with them.
