Finally gave in and read Saga after years of avoiding it...
I've been reading comics for like 15 years now and I always avoided Saga because the hype was just so loud. Everyone at my local shop in Portland kept telling me to pick it up but I figured it couldn't be that good, you know? Then last month I was stuck waiting for a bus in the rain for 45 minutes and the guy next to me handed me his copy of Volume 1. I read the whole thing standing there in the drizzle and I had to walk back to the store to buy the next three volumes. The way the characters talk to each other feels so real and messy and the art has this weird beauty to it I wasn't expecting. Now I'm all the way through Volume 7 and I can't believe I wasted 10 years being stubborn about it. Has anyone else had a series they avoided forever and then got completely pulled into?

I put off reading Jeff Lemire's Essex County for years because everyone hyped it up as this deep emotional thing, but then I finally grabbed it at a used book sale last summer and it completely wrecked me for a week. The way he writes about grief and family just hits different when you actually sit down with it. What was the thing that finally made you cave and read Saga?
