Full face masks: safety must-have or just in the way?

Some divers on my job say they're key for clear comms and keeping safe down there. I find them too big and slow, especially in tight spots like under piers. Which side are you on?

Honestly, it comes down to the job site. If you're dealing with serious dust or fumes, the full face mask is a no-brainer for health. But for quick jobs in cramped spaces, the bulk just isn't worth the trouble. Pick your gear based on the actual hazard, not just habit.

Is it really that serious? Regular masks do the job most of the time, even in tight spots. Full face ones just seem like extra hassle.

But after @the_ray's story, I use a full face mask to avoid dust in eyes and mouth.

My friend Jake was working in a dusty warehouse last month. He used a regular mask, but some dust still got in his eyes and mouth. @kevinallen, he ended up with a nasty cough and eye irritation for days. After that, he switched to a full face mask and hasn't had any issues since. Sure, it's more gear to deal with, but avoiding that kind of discomfort is totally worth it.
