Saw a side scan sonar image from 1990 vs my setup last week
I was going through some old job files from the early 90s and found a side scan sonar printout on thermal paper. Looked like a blurry mess compared to what I get now with my current unit. Back then you were lucky to get any detail at all, now I can pick out individual rocks and cables on the bottom. Has anyone else noticed how much easier survey work has gotten with modern gear or is it just me?

My side scan from back then looked like a potato drew it.

Right, so your potato comment is pretty spot on? I remember staring at one of those old thermal paper prints trying to figure out if the blob was a shipwreck or just a weird rock formation. You had to squint so hard your eyes would cross, and half the time the paper would curl up or fade in the sun. Honestly, my current setup makes me feel like I'm cheating, picking out cables and debris like I've got some kind of underwater x-ray vision or something.
