Had the worst Tuesday of my career last month

Got called into an office building downtown to fix a file server that was acting up. Turned out a cleaning crew had unplugged the UPS overnight and the drives got corrupted. Spent 8 hours rebuilding the RAID array from backups only to find the tape drive had failed too. Has anyone else dealt with a double failure like that or am I just unlucky?

Dang, did you check the UPS logs to see exactly when it died?

Check the UPS logs as soon as you can. Those logs will tell you exactly when the power cut out and how long the battery ran before it died. Most enterprise UPS units log every event, so you can see if it was a quick brownout or a full outage that lasted an hour. Sometimes the logs also flag if the battery was getting weak before it failed, which helps decide if you just need a new battery or a whole new unit. Don't skip checking the logs though, they're the first thing support will ask for when you call to file a warranty claim.

Agree with @laura_wilson, check those logs first thing.
