A drywall finisher in Austin told me my mudding technique was all wrong

I was working on a new build near the Domain last week and this old timer with 25 years experience watched me tape a corner. He said I was putting too much mud on the knife and then spreading it thin instead of doing it in passes. Has anyone else had someone call them out on a basic thing that actually made a big difference in the final look?

Oh man, that exact thing happened to me with a painter, not drywall though. This guy saw me cutting in a ceiling line and just shook his head. He showed me to use way less paint on the brush and not try to cover it all in one go. It drove me crazy at first but I tried it his way and the line came out so much cleaner and faster. Sometimes those old timers have a point even when it stings to hear it. Now I always think about light passes instead of heavy ones, it really does make the final look smoother.

Nah, I gotta disagree here, loading the brush heavy saves me time and I'd rather risk a thick line than go back for seconds.
