I finally learned why my hammer kept slipping after 20 years

I was framing a wall in my buddy's garage last Saturday near Detroit and my hammer kept sliding off the nails. Turns out I had been gripping it wrong the whole time, with my thumb wrapped over the top instead of along the side. A old carpenter walking by laughed and showed me the right way in about two seconds. Has anyone else had a basic tool technique click way later than it should have?

lol that's wild, I had the same thing happen with a tape measure last year. Thirty years of squinting at the lines before realizing I could just read the numbers on the side lmao.

Heard some carpenter talking about this once, said he spent years eyeballing the 1/16th marks before someone told him the little diamonds are for studs or something like that. Kinda makes you wonder what other obvious stuff we're all just missing, you know? Like with the tape measure thing, I always just assumed the numbers were for the total length, not the individual marks. It's one of those things where you feel kinda dumb after but then you're like, well now I know.

Did you seriously go 20 years without anyone mentioning that to you?
