Unpopular take: skip the expensive heat protectant sprays

I've been doing hair in Tulsa for 7 years and I think most of those $25+ heat protectants are a waste. I've tested the cheap stuff from the beauty supply against high-end brands using the same flat iron at 410 degrees on mannequin hair, and the damage after 3 passes was nearly identical. It matters way more that the hair is fully dry and your tool is clean than whatever spray you use. What's your go-to budget protectant that actually works? I'm open to being proven wrong here.

The real culprit is mineral buildup on hair from hard water, which no spray fixes anyway.

You know I was totally convinced it was just my shampoo stripping my hair or whatever, but you're making so much sense. I lived in a place with crazy hard water for two years and my hair felt like straw no matter what fancy products I bought. I tried every spray and mask on the shelf, it was a whole shelf in my bathroom dedicated to fixing it. Then I moved across town to a different water source and suddenly my hair was soft again with the same cheap shampoo. It blew my mind, honestly. I never even thought about the mineral angle until just now, so yeah, you totally changed how I see this whole thing.
