I keep seeing writing prompts that are just 'a character finds a magic object' and I think that's missing the point

Honestly, Blake_owens nailed it, I saw a prompt last week that was just "a magic key".

Yeah, I read a blog post that said exactly what @blake_owens is getting at. It's all about the trouble the thing causes.

What exactly is the point they're missing? A magic object is just a tool. The real story is what the character does with it, or how it changes them. A prompt that only gives the object leaves out the entire conflict. It's like saying "a person has a car" without saying if they're racing it, fleeing in it, or living in it. The interesting part is always the why and the what next.
