Overheard a shop foreman say he never changes crankcase oil filters
Guy I know runs a fleet of dump trucks and told me he just lets them run until they clog or blow. I asked about the bearing damage from bypassed debris and he shrugged it off. Has anyone actually seen a motor fail from this or is he just lucky?

Man, I've seen it happen firsthand with a buddy who runs a landscaping crew. He had a old F-250 that he never changed the oil filter on, just topped it off when it got low. The filter eventually collapsed inward and that sent all the crud straight through the bearings. That motor started knocking worse than a hotel door at 3 AM and seized up about two weeks later on a job site. He had to drop five grand for a junkyard swap.

@shane_morgan never thought about it that way, but you just convinced me to actually replace my filter now.

Could a clogged filter really collapse inward like that though?
