Three coats of primer on a bedroom ceiling patch last year still bled through because I used the wrong type for the stain. Number 319 from the paint store guide specifically says to seal water stains with an oil-based blocker first. Cheap latex primer just lets the tannins leech right back up.

Three coats? That's insane. I would have lost my mind after the second one failed. Oil-based is the only thing that works on a real water stain, it's like painting over a coffee spill with water.

It's the same with quick fixes on cars or tech, skipping the right prep work always comes back to bite you later.
