Overheard a contractor say 'level is a suggestion, not a rule' at the lumber yard yesterday

Made me wonder how many of my slightly crooked shelves are actually just following that same philosophy, has anyone else gotten away with something that wasn't perfectly straight?

My deck has a 2 inch drop that I call character.

That two inch drop keeps the raccoons from nesting under there I bet.

Wait, two inches? That's way too much. I can't believe someone would build a deck with that big of a drop. That's not character, that's a lawsuit waiting to happen when someone trips and eats it. Most decks barely have a half inch drop if even that, and that's only because the ground settled weird. Two inches is a massive tripping hazard, especially at night or when it's wet out. I'd be ripping that thing out and redoing the footings before someone broke an ankle on it.
