Overheard a guy at Home Depot say something about painting that changed my mind

I was standing in the paint aisle last Saturday picking out samples for my living room. There was an older gentleman next to me talking to his grandson. He said "son, paint ain't about covering the wall, it's about catching the light." I stood there for a good minute thinking about that. For 20 years I've just been slapping on color to hide old marks. Now I'm rethinking my whole approach to picking sheens and tones. Anyone else ever had a random comment like that change how they look at a basic task?

That old guy nailed it. The difference between flat and eggshell isn't just shine, it's how the room feels at different times of day. I started paying attention to that after a buddy told me "white ain't white" and showed me how north facing rooms need warm tones or they look like a basement. Now I test samples on three different walls and check them morning, noon, and night before I buy a single gallon. It's annoying extra work but it saves you from painting twice. Caught the light right once and you'll never go back to just hiding scuff marks.

All that work just so the dog can sneeze on it day one.

Why would you test paint on three walls and watch it all day when a $10 gallon of flat white looks exactly the same after the dog sneezes on it? @parker_hall5 gets it - all that fuss over light angles and warm tones, and in a week you won't notice because your kid drew on it with a crayon. I painted my whole living room with leftover contractor grade from a friend's job, eggshell on one wall and flat on the other, and I still can't tell which is which unless the sun hits them at 4pm.
