Talked to a plumber at Home Depot about my sink leak...
I was looking for a compression fitting for a slow drip under my kitchen sink and an old plumber walked by and said 'stop using plumber's putty on everything.' He showed me how to use silicone caulk instead for the drain flange and it held perfectly after 24 hours. Has anyone else switched from putty to silicone for sink drains?

It's funny how little tricks like that end up being way better than the old way. I've noticed the same thing with caulk vs. putty on my own sink - putty always seemed to leave that oily residue that attracted dirt. It's kind of like how everyone used to use those cheap plastic anchors for drywall until someone figured out the metal toggle bolts hold way better. Same thing with using painter's tape instead of masking tape for trim - you just learn what actually works after a few messy mistakes. Makes you wonder what other old habits we're all still clinging to.

Oh man, the plastic anchors thing hits home - I once hung a heavy mirror with those and it came crashing down at 3am, scared the life out of me. Took me three tries with patch kits and a lot of swearing before I finally switched to toggle bolts. Guess I'm just slow to learn the stuff that actually works.

Wait, you hung a heavy mirror on plastic anchors? That's terrifying, I can't believe it didn't fall sooner.
