Old timer told me to heat treat before grinding... I didn't listen

My buddy Dale tried the same thing with a hunting knife, thought he could skip the triple temper cycle and just rough it out. He ended up with a blade that looked perfect but cracked right down the middle during the final quench, sounded like a gunshot in his garage. He spent three weekends on that thing, all gone in a split second because he wanted to save two hours of waiting on the oven. The worst part was he had a piece of 1084 with a killer pattern from some old saw blade, total waste of good steel. Now he jokes that thermometers and timers are his best friends, but I can tell it still stings when he talks about it. You ever have a project that made you swear off shortcuts for good?

Had a chat with a dev yesterday that flipped my take on AI code assistants

Honestly, I think everyone's missing the real issue here. These tools are trained on average code from the internet, so they spit out mediocre solutions by default. They're great for boilerplate or when you're stuck on syntax, but the second you need anything clever or specific to your project's weird edge cases, they fall apart. The devs who swear by them probably just haven't hit that wall yet or they're writing really simple stuff. Ngl, it's like trusting a GPS that only knows the main roads and then blaming you when it sends you down a dead end.

Pro tip: The mud pan angle trick for inside corners

Dude totally. It's wild how a few degrees off on a knife edge makes the difference between shaving sharp and just kinda smashing through whatever you're cutting. I spent a whole afternoon once messing with the angle on an old hunting knife, going back and forth between 20 and 25, and it was night and day on the pull through some rope. You really feel it in the cut, like the steel just bites in better at that sweet spot. Once you nail it, you can't go back to a dull edge.

Why does nobody talk about the hidden cost of cheap safety glasses?

So you're saying dish soap on glasses is a good thing? Won't that strip the anti-glare coating or mess up the lenses over time? I'd rather deal with a little fog than ruin a $200 pair of frames.

I finally had to walk away from a contract over the indemnification clause

Is it really that serious though? Honest question - did you have any actual reason to think you'd be liable for their legal costs? Seems like a lot of money to walk away from over standard legal boilerplate.
