Overheard a senior drafter say 'dimensions are just suggestions' at a job site in Denver

He was looking at my CD set and said that with a straight face, then walked off to grab coffee without explaining. Has anyone else gotten weird advice from an old timer that made zero sense at first?

@simonlee's probably right but I'd check those dimensions with a tape measure first.

Oh man, that is classic old timer wisdom right there. I get what he means though - in the real world, site conditions are never perfect and you have to adapt. A sixteenth of an inch on paper is nothing when concrete is a quarter inch out of square. But saying it out loud like that without explaining? That's just grumpy gatekeeping, honestly. It took me years to realize he was talking about tolerances and practical work, not literally ignoring dimensions. Still, if he said that to a green kid, that's pretty unhelpful.

I mean I used to think that was crazy too but honestly it kind of clicked for me later.
