Just realized how much I learned from a deckhand on the Columbia River back in '98

We were pulling the ladder on an old bucket dredge near Astoria, and the winch started to slip. This old guy named Carl just put his hand on the cable and said, 'Listen, it's singing the wrong song.' He meant the sound changed before the gauge moved. I still think about that when I hear a pump or a winch now. Anyone else have a moment like that where someone taught you to 'listen' to the machine?

Man, that's wild. So what did Carl do next, like did he have a specific way to fix it once he heard the "song" change?
