A client said my corner bead work looked 'wavy' and it made me rethink my whole process

I was finishing up a basement in a new build over in the West End, feeling pretty good about it. The homeowner came down, looked at a long wall corner, and just said 'That looks a bit wavy to me, doesn't it?' I stepped back and, honestly, he was right. I was rushing, just nailing the bead on and going heavy with the mud to hide any gaps. I realized I wasn't taking the time to really check the framing behind it for any high spots or bows. Now, before I even touch the bead, I run a 4-foot level along the studs and shave down any proud spots with a rasp. I also switched to using screws instead of nails so I can adjust it before the mud goes on. It adds maybe 15 minutes per corner, but the lines are dead straight every time. Has anyone else had a client point out something obvious you were just blind to?

Oh man, that's so real. My buddy had a client point out his tile lines were off by like a quarter inch and he didn't see it until she said it. Totally changed how he sets his layout now.

Read an article about a contractor who started using laser levels for every single layout after a similar mess up. He said the naked eye gets tricked by room angles all the time. Now he snaps chalk lines but still checks with the laser before any tile goes down. That tiny bit of extra time saves him from call backs. Clients notice the smallest details when they live with it every day.

Seriously, the naked eye is a liar. I once stared at a row of cabinets for ten minutes swearing they were straight. My buddy walks in, holds up his phone level, and it's off like a drunk sailor. Now I trust lasers more than my own brain. That quarter inch might as well be a mile once you see it.
