A 12 inch knife for a first coat on a ceiling is a bold choice. You must have the forearms of a superhero after that. Hope you had a good chiropractor on speed dial.

My uncle tried using a 14 inch knife to skim coat his whole living room once. He said his shoulder clicked for a week straight. I stick to the 6 inch for ceilings now, it's just not worth the pain.

I actually find the 12 inch way easier for ceilings.
