Stopped using a level on every joint and started trusting my eye for long runs
Been fighting wavy butt joints on 14 foot ceilings for years until I watched a guy in Denver just eyeball a whole hallway and it came out dead flat. Has anyone else tried skipping the level on straight runs to speed things up without messing up the finish?

Have you tried holding the level at a slight angle to catch the low spots? @the_laura is right about timing being key, I usually check my first few joints with a straightedge before trusting my eye on the rest.

Hit or miss but SO worth it when it works.

Oh man, that is so true! I tried getting my mom into a similar thing last summer and she ended up with that weird rubbery texture that just ruins everything. Totally my fault for not watching the timing. I was so bummed because I hyped it up for weeks. Eventually I gave it another shot and it came out perfect, like restaurant quality. Now she won't let me make it unless I promise to set a timer.
