Am I the only one who waited 5 months on a $3,400 invoice and finally sent a demand letter?
Back in April I wrapped a logo and brand guide for a bakery owner in Portland. She loved everything, said the check was in the mail, then went quiet. I sent three friendly emails over two months, then a fourth with a late fee note. Nothing. Last month I sat at my kitchen table on a Tuesday night, printed her contract, and mailed a demand letter with a 10 day deadline. I used a template from a legal site and paid $12 to send it certified. She called me the next morning, all sweet, saying her bookkeeper quit and she lost track. She paid the full $3,400 plus $150 in late fees by Friday. I felt like a jerk for waiting so long to get firm. Has anyone else had to go the demand letter route, and did it torch the relationship after?
Oh man, I read a small biz blog once that said most people wait way too long to get firm and it almost never hurts the relationship once the money shows up. Good on you for finally sending it.
