Spent $80 on a glass weight crock and it broke within a week
Picked up a fancy glass weight crock from a local kitchen supply store for my sauerkraut batch, thought it would hold up better than my zip bag method. Third time I used it a crack appeared along the side and it leaked brine everywhere. Anyone have a glass weight that actually lasts or should I just stick with the bag trick?

Man, this is just like every "specialty" kitchen gadget I've ever bought. I swear there's a law of diminishing returns the more you spend on something that used to be dirt simple. My mom's been making sauerkraut in a plain old mason jar with a ziploc bag of water for twenty years, never a crack. But you go and buy the "official" glass weight and it's basically a ticking time bomb. It's like when I bought an expensive mandoline that claimed to be "unbreakable" and the first carrot I sliced chipped the blade. The cheap plastic one from the dollar store still works fine. Sometimes the old school hack is just better, even if it looks janky.

Bought a fancy garlic press once that cost more than my first car. Gave up using it after the third time I had to pick metal bits out of my pasta. Have been smashing cloves with the flat side of a knife ever since and it works just fine.

The part people miss is that these gadgets are designed for people who don't actually cook much. Someone who makes kraut once a year buys the fancy weight and it works fine for them. But people doing it every few weeks find the cheap tricks work better because they've figured out the real process. The expensive stuff is really just marketing to people who want to look like they know what they're doing. Same thing with cast iron pans. Give me a beat up lodge from a garage sale over a fancy $200 brand any day. These companies bank on beginners who think they need gear instead of skill.
