Can we talk about paying for a pricing template that was basically useless?

I spent $40 on a 'freelance rate calculator' sheet from a big name online, but the numbers it gave me for my first logo job were so high I almost lost the gig... has anyone found a better way to get a starting point that doesn't scare off new customers?

My buddy bought one of those fancy rate guides last year. It told him to charge like $2,500 for a basic website. He quoted a local bakery that price and they literally laughed on the phone. He ended up doing the job for $800 just to get the work. Those sheets don't know your town or your client's budget.

Ugh, that's the worst. I used to swear by those templates, but honestly, just asking other freelancers in your area what they charge changed everything for me.

Changed everything" feels like a lot, @owens.laura. Asking around is fine, but rates are all over the place anyway. My area has people charging triple for the same work. It just adds more noise.
