Should you pitch a flat rate or hourly for your first editing job? I went back and forth for weeks.
I tried flat rate on a 2,000 word article for a small blog and made $50 an hour, but the next project took twice as long and killed my profit. Has anyone else found a solid rule for when to pick one over the other?

Honestly I've found it's like deciding whether to pay for a buffet or order off the menu, you know? Flat rate works great when you know exactly what you're getting into, but anything unexpected and you're the one eating the cost. Hourly is the safer bet until you have enough experience to guess how long stuff actually takes.

Eating the cost" is a scary way to put it, I'd be panicking over every unexpected hiccup.

Oh, you mean like gambling but with your time as the bet? Flat rate is fun when you're feeling lucky and the project looks simple, but the second you hit a surprise revision it's like finding out the buffet ran out of your favorite food. Stick with hourly until you can predict editing timelines better than a weather app predicts rain.
