I finally stopped scoffing at paying for a legal template bundle

For two years I used free contract templates I found online for my freelance work. They looked fine and saved me $50 each time. Then a client in Chicago disputed a payment clause I thought was standard, and the free template didn't protect me at all. I ended up losing $700 because the language was vague. That's when I paid $75 for a bundle from a legal writer's site - now I actually read the terms before I send anything.

$700 is a pretty cheap lesson when you think about it. Could've been way worse if that clause really got litigated. Free templates are basically just asking for trouble, turns out.

Heard a buddy lost 2k on a deal cause his free contract had nothing about late payments.
