Warning: I just hit 90 days in Lisbon and my tax setup is a total mess
I moved here thinking I could figure it out as I went, but now I'm staring at forms for the NIF, social security, and VAT and I have no idea which one to do first or if I need a local accountant.

Saw a post on a Lisbon expat group last week about this exact thing. A guy tried to file his own VAT return and used the wrong tax code. He ended up with a huge bill for back taxes he didn't actually owe. Took him months to fix it with the finance office. The order you do things matters a lot, and the rules are not clear at all. Getting help early seems to be the only way to avoid a bigger problem later.

Honestly I was the same, thought I could wing it with online guides. But after missing a deadline and getting a fine, I had to get an accountant. It cost more upfront but saved me so much stress, they knew which forms to do in what order. I mean the tax system here is just not something to figure out alone.
