TIL most garage shelves have a way lower weight limit than I thought
I was about to load up my new shelves with heavy tool boxes and random bins, then I actually read the manual. It said each shelf can only hold like 50 pounds max, not the 100 I assumed. I found this out from a label inside the box after I already built the thing. Anyone else ever miss this detail and have to rethink their whole setup?

Wait, you're telling me I can't store my anvil collection on the top shelf? That's basically false advertising if you ask me. I built those shelves thinking I was getting heavy duty storage, and now I'm basically just displaying empty bins like some kind of minimalist art piece. Guess I'll have to move my tool boxes to the floor and use the shelves for nothing but feather dusters and empty cardboard boxes. The dumb part is they put that label inside the box, not on the outside where you'd actually see it before you spend an afternoon assembling the thing. At least the anvil will make a great doorstop now.

Dude I made that exact same mistake with a set of plastic shelves from the big box store. The label said 250 pounds per shelf but that's like per shelf if you spread the weight evenly and don't sneeze near it lol. I ended up reinforcing mine with some 2x4s underneath and that actually helped a ton with the heavy stuff. @evan_grant70 that 3am crack sound is the worst wakeup call ever I had to replace a whole wall of drywall after mine collapsed. Save the anvil for the doorstop though those things are bulletproof and way better than those cheap rubber stoppers that slide everywhere.

Oh man, @juliaa65, you just reminded me of my own garage shelf disaster. I loaded up my shelves with old paint cans and heavy car parts, then heard a loud crack at 3am thinking raccoons broke in. Nope, just the shelf giving up on life. Now I got my power tools living on the floor like homeless tools, and the shelves only hold empty pickle jars and my collection of mismatched screws.
