Bought a 'pro' kiln shelf from a guy at the Asheville market and it cracked on the first firing

He swore it was a high-alumina shelf from a studio closing sale, but it had a hairline crack I missed. Cost me $90 and ruined a whole batch of pendants I was annealing. Anyone know a good supplier for small studio shelves that won't break the bank?

That "hairline crack you missed" is on you for not checking it closer before buying. The guy at the market probably just wanted to clear out his old stuff and gave you a fair price. Maybe you just pushed the shelf too hard on that first firing?

Look, if I had x-ray vision I would have used it. The guy at the market was moving faster than a used car salesman on a hot lot. Fair price? Maybe for a planter, not a kiln shelf. And I didn't push it, I loaded it like a normal person. That crack was just waiting to say hello.

Sellers should point out flaws, especially in something that gets fired.

Ugh that sucks, murray.pat is right about sellers needing to point that stuff out. Heard a potter say to always check second-hand shelves with a coin tap test before buying.
