My fancy standing desk motor just died after 8 months
Honestly I was halfway through a zoom call last Tuesday when my desk made this grinding noise and just stopped moving. It got stuck at sitting height so I had to work hunched over for the rest of the day. I ended up taking the whole thing apart and found a stripped gear inside the motor assembly. Has anyone else had a motorized desk fail on them? What did you do to fix it without dropping another $400 on a whole new setup?

Or is it though? I mean did you actually die or did you just get mildly annoyed for a day. Seems like a first world problem to me.

Eight months is rough but honestly not surprising. I bought one of those cheap motorized desks from Amazon a couple years back and the motor started smoking after six months. Took it apart just like you did and found the same stripped gear problem. Ended up going to a hardware store and finding a metal gear that was close enough to work with some filing and a little bit of super glue. It held up for another year before the whole thing just gave out completely. Now I just use a regular old desk with a monitor riser I built from two by fours. Way cheaper and nothing to break.

You mentioned building a monitor riser from two by fours, which is smart, but the real hack might be just accepting that cheap motorized desks are basically disposable furniture now. People get obsessed with the idea of standing all day but then end up sitting at their fancy desk anyway. Honestly if you want to stand, just stack some books on a regular table and call it a day.
